The
Visionary
Maharshi Karve's life unfolds a classic
story of a social worker. Dhondo Keshav
Karve was born in 1858 in a small village
Murud in Konkan. He completed his education
against all sorts of odds and started his
career as a professor of Mathematics in
Fergusson College.
Karve strongly advocated remarriage for
widows. He himself married a widow in 1893
and set an example. Those were the dark
gloomy days for women in India. They would
be married at a very tender age. They had
little honour in the family and a negligible
place in the society. The condition of widows
was deplorable beyond imagination. A bright
ray of hope emerged when Maharshi Karve
started a home for the widows in 1896. Karve
had a relief - the conditions of women should
change for the better only when they would
be educated and self-reliant.
