The Visionary

Maharshi Karve's life unfolds a classic story of a social worker. Dhondo Keshav Karve was born in 1858 in a small village Murud in Konkan. He completed his education against all sorts of odds and started his career as a professor of Mathematics in Fergusson College.

Karve strongly advocated remarriage for widows. He himself married a widow in 1893 and set an example. Those were the dark gloomy days for women in India. They would be married at a very tender age. They had little honour in the family and a negligible place in the society. The condition of widows was deplorable beyond imagination. A bright ray of hope emerged when Maharshi Karve started a home for the widows in 1896. Karve had a relief - the conditions of women should change for the better only when they would be educated and self-reliant.

Maharshi Karve was greatly impressed by women's university in Japan. He advocated a similar venture in India. The concept was not easily acceptable to people. Anna sought support of noted social workers, traveled widely to address people and collected funds for the University. Finally, he established the first ever Women's university in Hingne in 1916. It is now known as Smt Nathibai Damodar Thakersey (SNDT) Women's University. It has gained reputation all over the country for its specially designed innovative courses for women. The work of Maharshi Karve has now blossomed to over 50 units, which are evolved into an educational center of national and international recognition. Some of them are :
